In April 2006 in Southern Sudan, UNICEF staff member Kim Jial (wearing a T-shirt that bears the UNICEF logo) helps register demobilized child soldiers in the village of Khorfulus in Jonglei State. Some 250 children are being demobilized, the largest number since the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement between the (former) Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army and the Government of Sudan in January 2005. This agreement commits both parties to the demobilization of child soldiers throughout the country. Some 20,000 children have been demobilized in Southern Sudan since 2001 with UNICEF support. An additional estimated 2,000 children are still with armed groups and other forces.
